Maurice Grossman, Lady Godiva, lamp 1

$0.00
Lamp 1 of a pair made by beloved ceramic artist Maurice K. Grossman of Tucson, Arizona. Mr. Grossman started the University of Arizona ceramics program in 1956 and ran it for about 35 years. He passed away in 2010 due to complications from surgery.

Speaking with Mr. Grossman's family, these lamps were part of a series made to commemorate Lady Godiva's naked ride through the streets. And while she rode on a horse, Maurice put her on bull as a tribute to Pablo Picasso (who he'd earlier met).

This is example number 1 where Lady Godiva is atop the bull.

Mr. Grossman was known to have done other examples of Lady Godiva sculptures. This unusual example being a lamp is believed to have been a commission.

Condition is very good to excellent. The work is in bare clay and is loosely executed. It's rough to the touch in spots but it's unclear whether any parts of it were damaged from use.

Stoneware sculpture measures 14.5 x 6 x 12.75 inches (LxWxH)
Measures 27.75 inches high with shade
