Peter Voulkos abstract expressionist platter

Abstract Expressionist platter by one of studio ceramics all-time greats Peter Voulkos.

This example was thrown and fired in Feb 1964 at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC.  Mr. Voulkos was guest instructor when this object and another (both offered by Curated) were gifted to one of the school's techs following the demo.

Mr. Voulkos recommended a long drying period before firing in the school's kiln. The recipient was told to expect drying cracks at the edges during this process and the platter has those.

That tech, who will remain anonymous for now, went on to have their own successful 50 year career in clay before recently retiring.

Item measures approx. 17.25 x 17.25 x 4.75 inches (LxDxH)

There are some chips plainly visible at the edges from display over the years. As these were demo pots, both are unsigned.

I am including at this link an article with pictures from the Washington Post written about Mr. Voulkos' time at the Corcoran School.

Please note the shipping/insurance fee is an estimate. Curated will work out specifics with the buyer following purchase.
