Warren MacKenzie

Warren MacKenzie (1924–2018) was one of the most influential American studio potters of the twentieth century. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, MacKenzie and his wife Alix worked at Bernard Leach’s pottery in St Ives, England. They later established a pottery in Stillwater, Minnesota, where MacKenzie developed the functional stoneware for which he became widely known.

MacKenzie’s work was strongly influenced by the Mingei tradition and emphasized useful, affordable pots intended for everyday life. His long teaching career at the University of Minnesota influenced generations of potters and helped establish Minnesota as an important center for American studio ceramics.
